Presenter: Vivienne Black
Session time: 2:15pm – 3:15pm
Abstract: Cultural Diversity: Skills for Embracing Differences
To embrace cultural diversity we need to heighten awareness of our conditioned mind which influences our thoughts, words and actions. This gives rise to our belief systems which cause us to behave in certain ways—positively or negatively. In fact, if we look at our own families, cultural diversity and differences exist. The key to success is in building the relationships and embracing those differences.
In this participative, interactive session we’ll look at:
- heightening our awareness of the conditioned mind
- applying strategies when dealing with challenging situations involving patients and families from different cultures
- managing emotions when things get tough
- using positive language in communicating with others
The knowledge, skills and strategies you’ll gain from this session will better enable you to manage difficult and challenging situations whether at work or home.
“Leaders in Leading: Capturing hearts and minds”
(ACS State Conference Abstract for 15 May 2014)

The most sustainable and powerful leadership lies in capturing the heart and mind of every individual you work with. Underlying the very essence of this leadership methodology is the ability to inspire a willingness and spirit as opposed to resistance and resentment.
Imagine this: Collaboration is invited. Your ideas, contributions and solutions are encouraged and gratefully considered. You are praised for your work and solution focus. You are treated with dignity, respect and care. You are valued and appreciated… How would you feel about your workplace and coming to work? How would you feel about your leader?
Could you possibly feel inspired to continue your creative contribution for solutions and improved care? How fulfilling would it be when you see the results of exceptional care being demonstrated in your facility?
The natural positive side effects of this style of leadership would be a sense of community and pride; camaraderie with lightness and laughter and a reduction in sick leave.
A pipe dream? No, it is not. This CAN be your reality and is totally achievable. You are already in the perfect position to achieve this.
This paper presentation is to awaken what you already know deep in your bones.
We are passionate and enthusiastic to assist you in unfolding your natural talent and gifts; to facilitate you in drawing the best out of your team; to building the most positive relationships around you; to inspire and help you and your team to contribute to the greater purpose and vision; most of all, to unleash the power within you and share this amazing journey of discovery that YOU, are the leader you have been looking for!

Discomfort and danger excites a response in our bodies in the first instance in order to survive.
You are confronted with immediate danger and your hormones release a “super human” fuel that runs through your veins so you can have a heightened awareness and be faster, stronger, braver…ready for fight or flight…whichever one will keep you alive. When you have exerted yourself and the danger has passed, you breathe out and your body returns to normal.
What happens when our daily lives excite this hormonal release on a regular basis and we don’t get to really ever breathe out, so to speak? It becomes “normal.”
What happens when this becomes a “normal” everyday state of being?
Your mental, emotional, physical wellbeing is at stake. If this goes on long enough, then you might find yourself in “burnout.”
Burnout is a form of destruction that seeps through to a soul level. Your passion and sense of possibility that was once a-light; is now burning out and exhaustion is setting in.
The good news is that once you put your attention on it, you can turn this around, starting today!
In this 90 minute session I’ll highlight:
- The danger of when an abnormal state-of-being becomes normal
- The emotional hijack that takes you out of the driver seat of your experience and adds unnecessary stress
- How to manage ‘Over-thinking’ and ‘Over-giving’
- The importance of nourishment at the soul level
- Running out of time = running out of life!
From this session you’ll take home insights, tools and strategies you can implement right away as you learn how to:
- Manage emotions when things don’t go your way
- Apply a set of Powerful Habits to put you back in charge of your experience
- Increase your vitality through applying one simple law
- Create a new perspective on the constructs of time

Do you sometimes feel frustrated, angry, irritated or resentful when someone accusesyou of something that is clearly not your fault? Or when someone is very aggressive towards you when you are only trying to help?
What about when you feel misunderstood and no-one seems to understand your side of the story? Or someone, a patient or otherwise, is just being plain difficult, demanding or complaining every time you see them?
How do you manage these situations and yet stay calm and in control when you are
about to lose it?
There are two distinct styles of leadership and each inspires its own motivation, or de-motivation as a result.

It begins with self-leadership.
This presentation will reveal skills and strategies in:
- reclaiming your core strength and communicating with your authentic self

- regaining your power and control in managing difficult people and situations

“Getting Everyone on the Bus: Essentials in Team Building”
View Conference Details
The question is quite a simple one – are you working in a team or are you working with a group of people who happen to be working at the same place?
The answer, however, might not be as simple, because it requires you to look at the people you work with seriously and maybe for the first time.
Here are some more questions for you to consider:
How much do you know about the skills of the people in your team? How do you deliberately make use of their skills and expertise? How do you let them know that they are valued and appreciated?
How often do you waste time in trying to change people or to get them to do things till you are blue in the face and they still don’t do what you want?
Do you base your feedback on “We get chocolates, we must be doing ok.” Or do you pay passionate attention to monitoring team success and improvement and sharing them with the team?
The ultimate question is….do you have everyone in your team on the same bus and enjoying the great journey of fun, humor, co-operation, achievement and success?
Come to the session and let’s share what is possible. The bus is waiting; let’s get on it and enjoy the journey!
